DEED – City of Saskatoon Reveals Design Concepts

The City of Saskatoon revealed a design concept for the potential Downtown Event and Entertainment District including visionary opportunities that expand beyond the arena and convention centre.

In a presentation at TCU Place on February 8th, actual renderings were revealed of what the proposed event centre/arena and convention centre would look like, with a focus along a transformed 22nd Street. Also shown was what the area around the event centre/arena and convention centre could look like and a direction for a rejuvenated Downtown.

The Downtown Event and Entertainment District is more than just an arena and convention centre, it includes a plan to achieve a vibrant mix of residential, business, social and outdoor activity. The District Plan also looks to create a cohesive strategy for the Downtown as a whole, ensuring that the entire area develops sustainably and productively, including making it more accessible for everyone to get to and around Downtown.

The City also included a report on acquiring the YMCA building and its associated land. This is part of a larger strategy to accommodate the expansion of the convention centre and a new parking structure in the area of Idylwyld Drive and 22nd Street.
