Seasonal Frame

Downtown Saskatoon is excited to announce a new placemaking initiative.

Our Downtown Saskatoon picture frame will now be changing with the seasons. Make sure to take your photo with the frame and tag us @DTNYXE!

The frame is located on the corner of 21st E and Spadina Crescent E, across from the Delta Hotels Bessborough.

WINTER – BISON

The Cree teaching of wâhkôhtowin is the relationship between everything and everyone, including animals and the land that Indigenous peoples have called home since time immemorial. In the winter of 2019, Wanuskewin welcomed bison back to the park, one of their ancestral homes on the Northern Plains. For the first time in 150 years, bison once again roam as stewards of the grasslands, strengthening the sacred connections across all of our shared communities throughout Treaty 6 territory.

SPRING – SASKATOON BERRIES

The coming of spring brings on the flowering of the Saskatoon Berry, and as our Downtown district blooms toward the warm sun, our streets start to come alive again. From patios opening to the Meewasin Trail blossoming with new growth, spring is as sweet as the Saskatoon berry itself.

Saskatoon’s name is derived from the Cree word ‘Mis-sask-quah-too-mina’ for the berry-producing plant. You can find opportunities to experience its flavour at many of our Downtown Drinking Establishments, Micro Breweries, Bakeries, and Coffee Shops.

SUMMER – MAPLE LEAVES

The maple tree has always been a prominent feature of the Canadian landscape. The indigenous people valued the maple tree for its sweet sap and the goods derived from it. In the 1850’s the maple leaf first appeared on Canadien pennies and then in 1965 it became the centrepiece of Canada’s new National Flag.

We chose the maple leaf for summer to celebrate all that is, was, and will be. To celebrate the growth of our diverse community and the evolution of not only Canada but of our Downtown district as well.

You can join our entire city Downtown as we come together for our many multicultural festivals throughout the summer. From Ukrainian Day in the Park to Folk Fest, Filipino Music and Food Festival to Canada Day.

AUTUMN – WHEAT

Fall in Saskatchewan is harvest season and our province would be nowhere without our hardworking farmers. From driving our economy to supplying our district’s restaurants and cafes with meat and dairy, we all owe thanks to our provincial farmers.

Be sure to visit one of our many Downtown restaurants, bakeries, and coffee shops for a showcase of Saskatchewan ingredients. We are confident you will not regret it.
