Downtown Saskatoon Unveils New Strategic Plan
and Refined Brand Marking a Confident New Era for the City’s Core

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Saskatoon, SK – (Tuesday May 5, 2026) – Downtown Saskatoon Business Improvement District (Downtown Saskatoon) has launched a bold new Strategic Plan and a refined brand identity, signaling a confident new chapter for the heart of the city. Together, these initiatives set a clear direction for strengthening the district as a place where businesses thrive, people feel welcome, and the community comes together.

“Downtown Saskatoon is evolving — and we’ve got a plan to take it even further,” says Shawna Nelson, Executive Director of Downtown Saskatoon BID. “Our new Strategic Plan and refined brand reflect the momentum we’re building. This is about leadership, confidence, and a commitment to a vibrant, resilient downtown that represents the best of our city.”

A Strategic Plan Built for the Future

The new Strategic Plan is organized around four key pathways
that will guide the district’s growth and development over the coming years:

1. Business Growth & Investment
Downtown Saskatoon is championing a “buy downtown, invest downtown, experience downtown” approach. With more than 1,000 businesses, 3,000 residents, and 18,000 employees, downtown is a major economic engine. A flagship initiative — the Downtown Saskatoon Exclusive VISA Gift Card — encourages people to support local merchants while exploring everything from retail to restaurants.
2. Safe & Welcoming Downtown
A clean, cared-for environment is essential to how people experience the district. Downtown Saskatoon’s Clean Team, a group of eight dedicated staff, works daily to maintain the core. With spring underway, their work includes sidewalk cleaning, watering flowerpots across 160 blocks, removing graffiti, and tackling litter.

3. Connectivity & Liveability
The plan prioritizes a downtown that is easy to access, easy to navigate, and enjoyable to spend time in. This includes improving walkability, accessibility, and creating an environment where more people choose to live, work, and stay.
4. Leadership, Identity & Impact
Downtown Saskatoon continues to serve as the voice of downtown — advocating for businesses, residents, and visitors, and building partnerships that move the district forward. This pathway reinforces the organization’s role in shaping a strong, unified identity for the city’s core. “This is more than a plan — it’s a commitment,” says Nelson. “Downtown Saskatoon belongs to all of us. When we invest in downtown, we invest in the future of our entire city.”

A REfined Brand for a Mature, Confident Downtown

Alongside the Strategic Plan, Downtown Saskatoon has introduced a refined brand identity
– a more classic, confident representation of downtown Saskatoon.

Why the Rebrand?

● Reflects maturity, stability, and forward momentum
● Signals that downtown is where Saskatoon comes together
● Moves intentionally away from “YXE” to a more timeless, district-focused identity
● Marks the 40th anniversary of the Business Improvement District

“A strong brand builds a stronger perception of downtown,” says Nelson. “It attracts customers, investment, and energy. It reinforces that there is active leadership and advocacy happening every day. And it builds confidence in downtown’s future.”

What the Community Will See

The refined brand will begin appearing across:
● Events and activations
● Communications and marketing
● Clean Team uniforms and equipment
● Programs and initiatives that drive people downtown

“This isn’t just a visual refresh,” Nelson adds. “It represents ongoing work, ongoing advocacy,
and our commitment to ensuring businesses feel supported and represented.”

A Downtown That Belongs to Everyone

Downtown Saskatoon is more than a place – it’s an experience, an economy, and a community. Downtown Saskatoon’s Strategic Plan and rebrand work together to strengthen that identity and build a downtown that the entire city can be proud of. “Let’s keep showing up, speaking up, and building up,” says Nelson. “Together, we’re creating a strong downtown – and a strong city.”
