Downtown Business Leaders call for Federal Action

Downtown Business Leaders call for Federal Action
to Strengthen Public Safety, Invest in Downtowns, and Supports for Homelessness, Mental Health and Addiction Services.

I had the opportunity to meet with many of my downtown colleagues from across Canada, as we collectively face rising crime, economic uncertainty, and an ongoing mental health and addiction crisis. Together, we called for stronger federal leadership to support the country’s downtown business communities.

Canada’s downtown districts are vital drivers of national economic growth. Residents of our downtown cores contribute nearly 15% more GDP per capita than those in rural areas. Yet, in the country’s largest downtowns, foot traffic remains 44% below pre-2020 levels. This decline in activity continues to undermine local business recovery and cultural vibrancy.

Public safety is economic policy. Without safe streets, there can be no environment that fosters business confidence or community well-being. Every Canadian has the right to feel safe in public spaces, and federal legislation must be informed by those living and working on the front lines of these challenges. This must become a national priority—for the health of our downtowns and the survival of our economy as a whole.

A truly effective response requires collaboration at every level of government, with Downtown BIDs actively included in these critical discussions. Downtown Saskatoon is committed to being part of the solution and part of the change.
