Citizen Cafe

Hello, my name is Brittany Brown, I‘m the owner of Citizen Café and Bakery. My passion for feeding the community comes from my family home, where comfort is made with food and the oven is always on. Although I am an incredible introvert, I love bringing people together.

Location is everything for a successful business and I knew Downtown was the place to find an appreciative audience for our gluten-free and vegan menu options. The community Downtown is vibrant and filled with diversity making it the perfect place for people to come together and connect. Not only do I want to feed people, but my goal is also to provide a comfortable respite in a place where you wouldn’t think to find one.

The growth of what Downtown will become is something I’m excited to be a part of. Saskatoon is malleable, we can shape it to be a place where we thrive in the community. The indigenous culture Treaty 6 holds is a powerful contribution to the future of our city. I believe we must embrace and celebrate the beautiful heritage and traditions native to the land to realize the full potential of our community. A short-term goal we have is to stay open late into the evening and host all kinds of events. Our safe space has many talented customers, and I would love for them to have the opportunity to express their art or interests at Citizen. Long term goal would be to enjoy a snack on our rooftop patio before going to watch a Pow Wow in the Downtown arena only a few blocks away.

When I’m not busy working one of my favourite things to do Downtown is wander around the back alleys. This sounds weird, but if you open your eyes each alley has a different character, artistic expression, interesting metal pipework, and new paint over old paint. A gateway into this type of adventure can be experienced through visiting Art Placement. At the right angle, I think the alleyway right behind their shop feels European.

Saskatoon is great but it’s the people that are the most special part of the city and it’s the people who we are here for. It is easy to express kindness to a passerby and impart a positive spark in their day.

Thank you and hope to see you all soon.
