Audra Balion Art Sanctuary

Hello, my name is Audra Balion and I am an interdisciplinary award-winning artist. I obtained a BFA in Studio Art (w/GD) from the U of S in 2013. Since then I’ve worked with theatre groups, including the Saskatoon Opera, local authors and comic makers, and I run my own art and design business. The Audra Balion Art Sanctuary in Drinkle 3 Mall is my studio, shop, and gallery, where I work, create, and teach painting, drawing, and comics. I work in many art spaces, including theatre and film design, comics, puppets, painting, sculpture, theatre, wearable art, and more. I often combine my theatre and visual artwork, and love including mysterious narratives in my work, driven by my passion for visual storytelling. I typically work in fantasy, myth, and surrealism. My work often looks at themes of postmodern identity, mental health, feminism, and the relationship between nature and technology. In 2023 I finished my ten-year project, the silent graphic novel “Flight Nineteen,” which won a grant from SK Arts and the Favorite Colorist Award from Sequential Magazine in 2021.

When choosing my studio and business location, I was looking for somewhere with a social element, and artsy vibes. I found that in Drinkle 3 Mall. The other merchants are very friendly, and it gives a real community feel. The mall is also very art enthusiastic and appreciative. There are other artists working in the mall, in several mediums. People who’ve never been to Drinkle 3 Mall are missing a hidden gem for sure.

I called my studio a Sanctuary because I wanted it to be a place where anyone could come to create art. I think that anyone can and should do art—even just for a bit of fun. It doesn’t matter your skill, just your willingness to try. I’ve already been working on making my space a safe space for anyone to try art, through class and workshops for youth and adults. I’d love to offer more programming for folks to discover a love for art and to see art in downtown continue to flourish!

When I am not working, I have a few favorite spots, like Art Placement to stock up and discover new supplies; I love checking out local artwork, like Alley Gallery, Art Placement, and Remai Modern; and of course, there are so many good places to eat. I love a good cafe, and there are several in walking distance from my studio.

Saskatoon is special to me because it is home. Ages ago, I thought I’d move away to BC for the arts scene, but this is where I want to be, with my family, friends, and community.
